STATEMENT ON REAUTHORIZATION OF THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR MISSING & EXPLOITED CHILDREN AND ON PREVENTION OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY ON THE INTERNET

December 5, 2007

National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) President and CEO Ernie Allen today issued the following statement on H.R. 2517 and H.R. 3791. The Protecting Our Children Comes First Act of 2007, H.R. 2517, reauthorizes federal funding for NCMEC through 2013. The Securing Our Adolescents From Exploitation (SAFE) Act, H.R. 3791, enhances current efforts to keep child pornography off the Internet.

Congressman Nick Lampson’s legislation reauthorizing the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (H.R. 2517) is a vital step that ensures efforts to protect America’s children against child abduction and sexual exploitation continue and expand.  Congressman Lampson, the founder of the Congressional Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children, has worked closely with Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, Chairwoman of the House Subcommittee on Healthy Families and Communities, and other members of Congress to keep our nation’s children safe from the dangers that are an unfortunate part of our world today.

For the first time, the reauthorization legislation details the wide range of tasks Congress has mandated the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to perform as the national resource center and clearinghouse for missing and exploited children.

Thanks to the leadership of Congressman Lampson, the SAFE Act (H.R. 3791) will ensure better reporting, investigation and prosecution of those who use the Internet to distribute images of illegal child pornography.
